On the inside
If the unit is facing you, with the screen at the top, treat the left side as if it is hinged, thereby avoiding any damage to the flex cables. So here you have it, the inner workings of the wondrous IPod. Take particular care in disconnecting the flex cable that runs from the board to the 3.5mm jack portion. This will make it easier to handle and reduce the chance of damage. Now you will have two pieces, the back cover and the board/HD.
Disconnect the IDE cable from the drive by pulling the black portion of the cable. It will take a bit of care, but it slides off. This seemed to solve the problem I had, the constant click of the HD, once the power supply was removed it was fine when I reconnected it. I had this problem again three weeks later. I borrowed my neighbor's iPod (best to tell them you are going to open it up, but I didn't see any reason) and swapped my HD with his, allowing me to restore and wipe MY drive with HIS iPod. This solved my problem permanently and it's been fine ever since.
