Conclusion

The OCZ PC-3500 Gold Gamer eXtreme Edition has one of the lowest memory timings out there.  What I really like about this memory is that usually when the memory is clocked higher, the latency also increases, but not with the PC-3500 Gold GX.  It still offers 2-2-2-5 timings at its rated 433 MHz.

From the benchmarks we can see that there is not much separation in memory performance between different manufacturers if their products have the same specifications.  Overall the OCZ performs fairly well by either coming in first (in half of the benchmarks) or second (in the other half).

The OCZ PC-3500 GX has no problems running at its rated 433 MHz and 2-2-2-5.  At that speed, you can see improvements in certain applications and games, especially Counter-Strike: Source on the Half-Life 2 engine.  With a lifetime warranty that covers running the memory up to 3.1 V, overclockers have no worries about playing around with their memory voltage.

Overall this is a solid memory for the modest overclocker.  Extreme overclockers will be looking for memory rated at 533 MHz or so.  Considering that OCZ offers PC-3200 (400 MHz) memory at the same latency timings, I would not recommend this memory to anyone unless they are thinking of overclocking their system.  This memory is suited for anyone who just wants some extra juice out of their system while maintaining stability.  These people can just increase their system clock speed a few MHz and it will be well within the rated speed of this memory.  If you know that you would not be overclocking your system, then I suggest you stick with the less expensive PC-3200 memory with 2-2-2-5 timings.  Many systems will run fine if you overclock your system bus by just a few MHz, so if you are the type that is willing to do this, then PC-3500 memory is well suited for you.  At least you will know your memory is still running within specifications.

Pros:

  • Looks great
  • Low latency (2-2-2-5) at 433 MHz
  • Warranty covering up to 3.1 V

Cons:

  • More expensive than their PC-3200 counterpart
