Introduction
ATP 2GB Secure Digital |
The lights are shining, the tree is decorated, and thereâ??s just one thing left to do as Christmas peeks its little head around the corner. Yep, time to fill those stockings.
With more MP3 players, digital cameras, and Pocket PCs flying off the shelves than ever before, flash memory is going just as quick. The fact that itâ??s becoming dirt cheap helps a little of course. Letâ??s get into a little background for those that arenâ??t quite familiar with the technology yet.
Flash memory has become extremely popular lately. With the proliferation of digital equipment in all areas of life, the need for an expansive and reliable memory platform to support that equipment is needed. Several types of media have been introduced: Smart Media, Compact Flash, Multi-Media Cards, and of course, Secure Digital. SD Cards have steadily become the heir to the flash memory kingdom, overtaking the bulkier Compact Flash that has been so popular due to their high storage capacities.
Smart Media went out the door a while ago, so you wonâ??t be hearing about it much. Compact Flash has become widely adopted, but industry trends seem to suggest itâ??s on its way out. Coming up to the plate are SD and MMC cards.
MMC cards are for the most part, a slightly thinner version of an SD card with the same postage-stamp sized body otherwise. In fact, most SD slots will also take MMC cards. Theyâ??re just a little harder to find in the US and Canada. MMC cards are considerably more popular overseas, used to a great extent for expansion capabilities to cell phones. This makes sense, as the phones overseas are considerably more advanced than what we can find in North America.

Now getting into it, what SD card should you be considering? Sandisk has arguably been the leader in the flash memory market for some time- the brand awareness is certainly something most people will recognize. However, a recent newcomer to the industry is a little known operation called ATP Electronics. This California-based company has hit the market running, releasing high-yield memory products of impressive performance.
This review takes a look at their latest offering- a 2GB Secure Digital card that pushes the storage capacity envelop. Can the newcomer trump the champ? Will David prevail against Goliath? Will the challenger defeat the Iron Chef? Letâ??s find out.
