Introduction
For those of you who have read some of my other articles, such as Starks Quest for Silence: Part 1 and my Thermaltake Purepower Fanless PSU review, know that I have this obsession with making my home computer as quiet as I possibly can. One of the key stepping stones in achieving this goal is to replace my current exceptionally loud PSU with a completely fanless one.
Why you ask? If you don't know the answer to that, then your experiences with PC power supplies must be extremely limited. For most models of power supply, the decibel output is not even consider when the device is being designed. Sure, you may be able to power the Hubble telescope with the brand new voltage being generated by you 650W PSU, but who really cares if it sounds like a helicopter is hovering over your house every time you use it?
I have mentioned this in previous articles, but unfortunately I (as well as many others out there I am sure) don't have the luxury of a dedicated room in which to run my personal computer. Therefore, my PC needs to go in a room that, in my case, is also used for sleeping. That's where the silence becomes key. In fact, decibel output in a power supply is the feature I look into almost as much as I do its performance.
So when I get the opportunity to evaluate a new piece of hardware that not only boasts silence but also performance, I get very excited. The latest one to come across my desk is the SilenX Luxurae Fanless PSU which is the top of the line fanless model from the SilenX Corporation. Written on the outside of the box is the slogan, "The Worlds Quietest Power Supplies!", a bold statement indeed. Let's take a look at this PSU and see whether or not that title is really justified. |
